Worship Overview
“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King
of Creation.” That one line from the 17th century hymn
describes the essence of Christian worship, which takes shape in the
following ways:
(The Book of Common Prayer, Pg. 857)
So in short, these four shape us as a people
of Word and Sacrament. The Word comes from
the four Bible passages we hear each Sunday, from the Sermon, and in
prayer. The Sacrament of Holy Communion (or Eucharist) is also a gift we
celebrate every Sunday—in part because of what Jesus himself says about
the bread and the cup in the Gospel of John, chapter 6.
The links in this Worship section of our
website will tell you more about our worship, its scriptural and
traditional roots as found in The Book of Common Prayer, 1979. You
can even take a look at our
bulletin. But really, part of knowing about Episcopal worship comes from
participating with us. Join us on Sunday mornings sometime
soon, and feel free to attend Fr. Rob’s forums about Episcopal life and
spirituality on Sundays mornings in Burtenshaw Hall.
A prayer before worship
“Almighty God, to you all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts
of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may
perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer,
pg. 355)
